A BIG LOSS……..

When a defense personnel give his life in a battle, we call it martyrdom. But what do we call he loses his life in a freak accident? That’s the question I pondered over. And how can the Indian air force afford to lose such qualified trained pilots in freak accidents? The irony of it all was that, while Wing Commander Oswald de Abreu body was being brought to his residence for the final rites, the Union Defense Minister was in goa to induct the MIG-29k’s in the IAF. While the IAF has now grounded the entire fleet of MIG-21’s after the incident (the one that late Oswald perished in) it’s a matter of ‘too little to late’. Aircrafts that were inducted years ago into the IAF have crossed their age limit, with the extent of being not airworthy. Otherwise experienced pilots like Oswald would not have commited suicide by crashing their airplanes after intense flying hours. Oswald was a hardworking officer who rose up the ranks of the IAF in a short span of time. He was due for a promotion soon. He had a perfect life, with an ever-loving wife with two wonderful kids. When I interviewed his uncle, he told me that Oswald applied for the IAF without anyone’s knowledge, and surprisingly he got selected. He wasn’t scared, on the contrary, he prided himself for serving the nation. It’s sad that life has to end for him like this. The priest who presided over the funeral mass chastised the IAF and hoped for a day that the IAF will be free of such unfortunate incidents. There is an urgent need to a major overhaul of the armed forces in terms of equipment. Deaths due to such incidents cannot be taken for granted. Let us hope that a situation like the movie ‘Rang De Basanti’ does not arise in our country. I salute this man who gave his life for his country.May Oswald’s soul rest in peace.

GETTING BLIND BY A ‘HIGH BEAM’

Many a times when i travel at night on my two-wheeler, I inadvertently keep my headlight on ‘high beam’. while many would not approve of this practice of mine, i would like to put forth my views. Firstly, the route that I normally traverse on is mostly unlit. If you are lucky enough, you may find a streetlight on. On the other hand, many a times I encounter a very dangerous situation. The roads at night are sometimes occupied, by not one or two, but a whole herd of cattle. It like as though the roads act as cool matresses. And these innocuous creatures come in dark skin tones that are hard to spot in the night. So unless you flash your high beam, you might end up with a damaged bike, a fractures jaw, a broken rib and a couple of minor or major injuries. The point that I am trying to make is, high beam at night, on goan roads, is a complete nessesity. But it does pose a hinderance to motorists as a high beam can blind a driver/rider. But I am sure they also know that the high beam was left on for a purpose. After all, who wants to sleep in GMC and end up with a amputated leg????

THE ADVANTAGES OF BEING A MEDIAPERSON……..

Yes, that’s what I want to talk about in this blog. The media supposedly commands respect from all quarters. I heard of this adage many a times. But I had a first hand experience a couple of days back. For some reason, I landed up the at our village panchayat. The people over there sometimes times think of themselves as people who are “VVVIP’s”. They think occupying a chair in that office is matter of prestige and pride. So they always tend to give themselves airs. My past visits to the panchayat always ended on an unhappy and sulking note. And the only reason would be their overblown egos. This was prior to joining the media. But what I experienced a couple of days back made me change this perception about them. There was a certain person at out panchayat that I had to interact inorder to get my work done. This certain person thinks that he occupies the highest seat of importance in this country. But when he asked me as to what I do, to which my reply was the obvious ” hanv reporter”, he suddenly started singing a very friendly tune to me. He calmly and politely explained to me how to go about my work. So much so that he asking me more about my work.

The moral of the story is: Lie to anyone by saying you are a mediaperson even if you aren’t. It won’t hurt if you say so.

GREETINGS FOR THE NEW YEAR

SORRY FOLKS, I COMPLETELY STOPPED BLOGGING……..I JUST COULDNT FIND THE TIME TO DO IT. BUT NOW I HAVE DECIDED TO BLOG ON AT LEAST ONE TOPIC EVERYDAY…….LET’S HOPE I STICK TO THIS…..

SO LET ME SHARE SOMETHING VERY FUNNY AND IMPORTANT. I WAS COMMUTING ON MY TWO-WHEELER. I SAW THIS GUY SUDDENLY OVERTAKE ME NEAR PORVORIM AND STARTED CHANTING SOME PRAYER TO THE ROADSIDE GOD. MY QUESTION IS…….IS THIS SAFE TO MOTORISTS ON THE ROAD? IF A PERSON, FOR A SPLIT SECOND LOSES HIS CONTROL, HE COULD PUT THE PERSON BEHIND HIM IN DANGER, THERFORE RISKING HIS LIFE. IF THAT IS SO IMPORTANT THEN HE SHOULD STOP HIS VEHICLE AND PAY HIS RESPECTS. THAT IS CERTAINLY NOT THE WAY TO PRAY.

I WILL CONTINUE WITH THIS TOPIC TOMORROW……ITS SOMETHING VERY IMPORTANT…….SOMETHING THAT CAN CHANGE THE MINDSET OF A VEHICLE USER.

GOA SET FOR ONE AND HALF MONTH OF HECTIC ACTIVITIES…….

Yes, Goa is set to witness some hectic activity over the next one and half month. first its going to be the International Film Festival of India, then the feast of the Patron of Goa, St. Francis Xavier,followed by Christmas and New Year. Well its a huge test fo the police force. Lets hope all this goes smoothly like it always does, year after year.

GOANS ROADS NOTHING BUT A GRIM REAPER

I happened to read a story on an accident. You might ask accidents happen everyday. But this was different. A couple in their late 30′s perished in the ghastly accident. What is even sadder is that they leave behind two children, one of which is a 6 month-old baby.

This is not the first time i have come across such an incident. Many young people have lost their lives on the road. And most of them have died due to the other person’s negligence. WHEN WILL SUCH INCIDENTS OF INNOCENT PEOPLE LOSING THEIR LIVES ON GOAN ROADS END??? it’s high time we do something to enlighten the masses on the principles of road and vehicle usage. otherwise such incidents will continue to take place.

FOND MEMORIES OF CHILDREN’S DAY……

School days really used to be a lot of fun. When we were in high school, we used to consider children’s day ‘our day’. We would feel proud that at least one day was dedicated to all of us……..the other thing was obviously to go home early and enjoy the day. Well, now that privilege is gone as i am no more a school going child!!!

Happy birthday to chaha Nehru and a very happy children’s day!!!!!

EVERYTHING FINE AFTER ‘PHYAAN’

Well, frankly speaking, never in my entire life in Goa did i ever imagine a cyclone in the month of November. Goa had a brush of cyclone ‘Pyhaan’ . Luckily the storm was not harsh. The met department issued an advisory a little late. As a result of which, many fishing trawlers that had ventured with crew on board did not make it back. I met a scientist at NIO who told me that the frequency of such unexpected cyclones is likely to increase. He attributed this to rise in co2 levels that in turn causes warming of oceans. So indirectly, this means man actions will ultimately lead to our doom. Incidently the hollywood movie ’2012′ has been released. Going by the reviews, it seems to be a movie worth the money. Looking forward to watching it soon.

Another interesting thing is , this piece is being posted in FRIDAY THE 13TH!!! Well how much is the number ’13′ unlucky remains to be seen.

GOA IN THE NEWS FOR THE WRONG REASONS

Although this piece should have been written long ago, i couldnt do so due to lack of free time. Any way now that i have started i will devote all my time to it.

First of all, the dissastrous canacona floods. Nothing stood in its way, the ferocity of mother nature was at its worst. Visuals of the floods were shocking to say the least. i couldnt have managed that such a situation could have happened in our state. It took just five minutes to sweep and destroy everything in its path. Houses, people, livestock, plantations…….. you name it. I am eagerly awaiting the government’s report on the scientific causes behind this calamity. our channel aired a flabulous documentary on the possible reasons for the floods. I was flummoxed.

The second major incident to put Goa on the national limelight were the Bomb Blasts at Margao. Call it the God’s miracle or anything else, i cannot imagine the aftermath had that bomb esploded in the manner it was planned. communal riots could have erupted, killing more people. Never before such an incident, that too allegedly by a Hindu organisation, has occured in our otherwise peaceful state.

And then there’s the Goa espress ramming into the mewar express. Again here i must mention, although 32 people perished in the accident, no Goan was injured.

Whatever the reason, Goa was under national glare for a month , BUT FOR THE WRONG REASONS.

GOOD TO BE ON THE FIELD WHERE THE ACTION UNFOLDS RIGHT BEFORE YOUR EYES!!!

so finally i can call myself a journalist….. not an expert though……. reporting is not as bad i thought it would be…….. its actually a lot of fun…… meeting new people, getting to see new places that actully existed without my knowing, and the most important of all, getting myself infront of the camera……its really exciting!!!
